The Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) is one component of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB). AIB includes the manufacturing facility in Talladega, Alabama and Birmingham, Alabama along with the operations of five Base Supply Centers in two states, which are located on Redstone Arsenal, Fort Novosel, Anniston Army Depot, Robins Air Force Base and Moody Air Force Base.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Full-Time Production Worker role will be responsible for training and available to work on various production responsibilities related to the manufacturing operations for Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB). This position reports to the Production Supervisor, AIB.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to perform production assignments to meet customer expectations and on time delivery schedules.
- Prior to employment may be required to complete a work skills assessment to demonstrate the ability to perform essential production assignments to become effective within the role.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum one (1) year of experience working with individuals that are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, multidisabled or has another significant disability.
- High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Certificate.
- Enrollment in AIDB Educational and/or Rehabilitation Program to allow for work experience.
- Three (3) months of work experience in a sewn products or machinery operations in a manufacturing environment.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Must follow AIDB policies and procedures.
- Must understand, support and follow the mission of the AbilityOne Program by remaining in compliance of statutory and regulatory requirements set forth in the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Act. You are expected to conduct all business ethically and lawfully.
- Demonstrate a good attendance record.
- Must be able to perform your responsibilities that sets a good example for others to follow.
- Must be able to deal pleasantly and courteously with all of the AIB Team to include co-workers, Supervisors, Line Leaders, Plant Manager and Executive Director.
- Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and deal with changes in the work assignments.
- Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Must learn basic knowledge of production operations that will include various production lines.

- Perform different sewing operations, garment construction, methods and techniques used in a modern cut and sew operations. This involves sewing operations on single needle sewing machine or programmable machine. You will need to be able to thread needle, change bobbins, align material, control pedal, and sew for different sewing operations.
- Perform tasks that require visual alignment of product or visual inspection of product conformance to standard.
- Complete kitting assignments for contracts.
- Pack the finished goods to prepare for shipping.
- Operate different type of machinery or complete assignments in the Paper Department.
- Operate different type machinery or complete assignments in the Mop Shop.
- Operate different type of machinery or complete assignments in the Screen Print & Embroidery Department.
- Janitorial Duties with general knowledge of janitorial equipment and basic housekeeping techniques. This includes operating janitorial equipment such as buffers, floor sweepers and vacuum cleaners.
- Must be able to cross train on multiple production lines.
- Meet production goals for each production assignment.
- May be required to sit for extended period length of time.
- May be required to be physically capable of standing and walking for extended lengths of time.
- May be required to lift up to 60 pounds on a regular basis.
- Work independently with minimum direct supervision.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment. Keep workstation clean and neat at all times.
- Must meet Safety and Quality Standards.
- Must possess or develop an understanding of cultures and needs of persons who are deaf, blind or deaf/blind, ensuring all actions and decisions demonstrate a respect for and value of persons with sensory loss.
- Must attend Disability Sensitivity Training within the first six (6) months of employment.
SALARY: Salary Schedule - Scale IB Rank 00 $11.08 - $13.12
Payroll Schedule - Paid Semi-Monthly
Direct deposit is required.
The work schedule will not exceed 19 hours a week. This is an exempt position, and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
