The Occupational Therapist is an integral part of the AIDB's Health and Clinical Services team, which also provides audiology, low vision, speech, equestrian, nursing, and physical therapy services. Together, the HCS team strives to provide services that enable students to successfully access the academic and residential environments at Alabama School for the Deaf, Alabama School for the Blind, and the Helen Keller School of Alabama. The ideal candidate is one who is flexible, self-motivated, possesses good organizational skills, and excels in a fast-paced team environment.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree from an accredited occupational therapy program
  • Must have current or be able to obtain Occupational Therapist licensure in Alabama
  • Currently certified by NBCOT or possess a temporary NBCOT certificate and acquire an NBCOT certificate in the first year of employment
  • Must exhibit exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Must have proven work experience of multi-tasking, managing projects, and meeting multiple deadlines
  • Must possess the ability to work independently, exercise discretion and use good judgment
  • Must have experience in collaborating with members of a multidisciplinary team


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited occupational therapy program
  • Pediatric experience that demonstrates knowledge and skill to design and conduct specialized programs of evaluation, prevention instruction, and habilitation for students with sensory impairments (pre-school through 21 years)
  • Knowledge of service delivery standards in early childhood, school, and transition programs for children 3-21 years of age



PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Process referrals for occupational therapy services for potential and current students of ASB, ASD, and HKS in a timely manner, in accordance with state, federal, and AIDB guidelines.
  • Independently, or as a part of a team, conduct screenings on all referrals to determine if further evaluation is necessary, or if children will benefit from OT services, in accordance with state, federal, and AIDB guidelines.
  • Efficiently and effectively manage all aspects of the delivery of occupational therapy services within the AIDB setting.
  • Evaluate areas of occupation (including ADL, IADL, education, work, play, leisure, and social participation), client/student factors, contexts, and performance skills and patterns related to the child's functioning in the home, school, community, or institution, as is appropriate with state, federal, and AIDB guidelines.
  • Educate students, family, and staff about the specific purpose and necessary procedures of occupational therapy evaluation.
  • Document evaluation summaries, treatment plans, discharge plans, and progress notes within time frames, formats, and standards established by AIDB and affiliated programs.
  • Participate in the preparation of formal transition plans based on identified needs of the child.
  • Document and present appropriate recommendations for follow-up related to transition or discharge from occupational therapy services.
  • Assist in hippotherapy classes at the MGH Special Equestrian Program with the PATH Registered Therapist, and participate in Education Village collaboration at the Arena with PT, OT, ST, and educational staff.
  • Participate in staff meetings as required by the Director of Admissions.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Admissions.
  • Must be willing to complete the American Hippotherapy Association education program.
  • Must be eligible to obtain NPI/Medicaid provider number and participate in the billing process
  • A sign language proficiency level of INTERMEDIATE according to the AIDB evaluation system must be obtained within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment (All applicants must provide documentation of sign language proficiency or take a sign language proficiency evaluation available through AIDB.)
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB

Direct deposit is required; bi-monthly payroll

This is an exempt position and is not subject to overtime or compensatory provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
