The Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) is one component of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB), which is the world's most comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Blind, Deaf, DeafBlind, multidisabled and their families.
Founded in 1932, AIB is the state's largest employer of persons who are blind or have significant disabilities. Mattie Smith's passion was to provide remunerative employment for women who were blind. Starting AIB meagerly with five donated sewing machines and five seamstresses, which would sew items for homemakers, AIB, experienced many products for the US Government, State and commercial customers including a contract to produce long neckties for each service branch. AIB has 315 employees that includes the manufacturing facility in Talladega, Alabama, and Birmingham, Alabama along with the operations of five Base Supply Centers in two states, which are located on Redstone Arsenal, Fort Novosel, Anniston Army Depot, Robins Air Force Base and Moody Air Force Base.

Through long-standing partnerships with organizations such as National Industries for the Blind and the AbilityOne Program, we connect people who are blind or visually impaired with government service contracts nationwide, providing companies with skilled workers and advancing opportunities for visually impaired individuals. The AbilityOne Program, authorized by the Javits-Wagner O'Day Act and administered by the U.S. AbilityOne Commission, is an employment program for people who are blind or have other significant disabilities. Partnerships also make possible the production of more than 3,000 SKILCRAFT products including cleaning & janitorial, mattress & bedding, medical supplies & equipment, office products & equipment, paints & tools, and writing instruments.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Purchasing Technician role will be responsible in purchasing materials, supplies, and equipment for the operation of our Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) at the Base Supply Center.
ABOUT YOU
You will play a vital role in operations of the Base Supply Center as you will be a part of the AIB team in producing high quality work. This position reports to the Store Manager - Base Supply Center, Redstone Arsenal.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Certificate
- Minimum (3) three years' work experience in purchasing experience as it relates to industrial manufacturing and/or retail operations with general office experience or training.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum one (1) year of experience working with people that are blind, visually impaired, deaf, deafblind or have other significant disabilities.
- Minimum one (1) year of work experience in a retail store environment.
- Minimum one (1) year of work experience using inventory control computer applications.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Must follow AIDB policies and procedures.
- Must follow Redstone Arsenal guidance and regulations to maintain access to the base.
- Must understand, support, and follow the mission of the AbilityOne Program by remaining in compliance of statutory and regulatory requirements set forth in the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Act. You are expected to conduct all business ethically and lawfully.
- Attend conferences, in-service training, and other functions as directed by supervisor.
- Must possess computer skills in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) and Google Suite.
- Must possess general knowledge of office equipment and machines.
- Must follow the AIDB policies or procedures related to the operations of purchases. This includes purchasing materials, supplies, items for resale, equipment, and other such goods and services. Competitively shop all purchases through available sources to provide AIB with maximum potential for profitability.
- Attend training on inventory control computer applications and become efficient in maintaining a database of purchased material and providing information to customers and co-workers.
- Maintain high organizational and time management skills and have the ability to handle sensitive or confidential information in a timely professional manner.
- Must comply with all safety requirements.
- Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and deal with changes in the work assignments.
- Demonstrate a good attendance record. Must be available to work the regular work schedule and may be required to work overtime.
- Perform your responsibilities that sets a good example for others to follow and demonstrate good leadership skills along with organizational skills.
- Each employee should deal pleasantly and courteously with all of the AIB team to include customers, coworkers, Store Manager, Base Supply Center Coordinator, Sales & Marketing Manager, and the Executive Director. This will include telephone, written correspondence by email and in person.
- Develop and establish vendor relations as related to the Base Supply Center items.
- Upon offer of employment, the applicant must complete a criminal history background check and be able to gain and maintain access to the military base.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Gain knowledge of Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR and DFAR) and the Master Solicitation as cited in Alabama Industries for the Blind government contracts.
- Read and interpret contracts and agreements, particularly government contracts, orders, modifications, exceptions, amendments, waivers, and summaries. Prepare to order materials as defined.
- Process and record orders in a prescribed manner to complete sales, and maintain sales histories, mailing lists, and other historical data required for planning purposes.
- Negotiate vendor warehousing, reductions, and other cost-saving measures in order to competitively quote products to customers.
- Develop and maintain a database of vendors to include price quotations, dates, quantities, and price schedules of items purchased.
- Generate procurement package and any supplemental documentation, including the purchase order requisitions, and forward to management for approval.
- Follow up with customers on any delinquent shipments.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of a system for securing products for AIB through established buying guidelines.
- Participate in annual physical inventory counts of the Base Supply Center.
- Perform periodic physical inventory counts including re-supply stock on shelves.
- Must possess or develop an understanding of cultures and needs of persons who are deaf, blind, or deaf/blind, ensuring all actions and decisions demonstrate a respect for and value of persons with sensory loss.
- Must attend Disability Sensitivity Training Class within the first six (6) months of employment.
SALARY: $18.45 - $22.01 Scale C5 Rank 39
This is a non-exempt position and is subject to overtime time provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Payroll Schedule - Semi-monthly, Direct Deposit is required
