The part-time O&M Specialist will work a flexible schedule in the afternoons, evenings, and on weekends to meet the needs of our students. This person will work with our students and community referrals.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Must be certified in Orientation & Mobility by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP).
- Must have a demonstrated knowledge of the rehabilitation process and experience. serving adults who are blind or DeafBlind.
- Must possess a valid Alabama Driver's License and be able to be insured by the AIDB insurance carrier.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide individualized orientation and mobility evaluation of and plan programs for blind and visually impaired adults including low vision travel aids, pre-cane skills, special travel needs, and sensory motor needs.
- Teach individualized orientation and mobility skills to all students scheduled to enable them to travel safely, efficiently, and confidently in familiar and unfamiliar environments at school, on the job, and in the community.
- Provide outreach orientation and mobility instruction to consumers in their home, job site, and/or community within surrounding counties.
- Transport students to various community locations as necessary to provide meaningful instruction in realistic learning environments.
- Provide both direct instruction and consultation to students with visual impairments.
- Prepare lesson plans inclusive of sequential and meaningful instruction geared to the student's assessed needs.
- Become familiar with and be able to use the Gentry database (ECM).
- Make and record observations of individual students as assigned, including, but not limited to, attendance, tardiness, inappropriate social behavior, dress, or other factors for the purpose of monitoring individual progress.
- Prepare sequential and meaningful instruction geared to the student's assessed needs, vocational goals and objectives, functioning level, and motivational level.
- Prepare and use equipment and materials for the development of orientation and mobility skills; e.g., tactual maps models, distance low vision aids and long canes.
- Actively participate in and initiate student staffing as needed.
- Participate in training sessions and provide in-service training on request.
- Maintain inventory of low vision and mobility equipment as assigned.
- Perform additional instructional duties as assigned.
- Must complete AIDB online training on Deafness, Blindness, DeafBlindness and Multiple Disabilities within 12 months of hire.
- Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an. agency designated and paid by AIDB.
SALARY: $39.91 per hour
Direct deposit is required; bi-monthly payroll
This is a non-exempt position and is subject to overtime and/or compensatory time provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act
