The Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) is one component of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB), which is the world's most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, multidisabled and their families.

Founded in 1929, AIB is the state's largest employer of persons who are blind or have significant disabilities. Mattie Smith's passion was to provide remunerative employment for women who were blind. Starting AIB meagerly with five donated sewing machines and five seamstresses, which would sew items for homemakers, AIB, experienced many products for the US Government, State and commercial customers including a contract to produce long neckties for each service branch. AIB has 315 employees manufacturing facility in Talladega, AL and facility in Birmingham, AL. AIB also operates five Base Supply Centers in two states, which are located on Redstone Arsenal, Fort Novosel, Anniston Army Depot, Robins Air Force Base and Moody Air Force Base.

Through long-standing partnerships with organizations such as National Industries for the Blind and the AbilityOne Program, we connect people who are blind or visually impaired with government service contracts nationwide, providing companies with skilled workers and advancing opportunities for visually impaired individuals. Partnerships also make possible the production of more than 3,000 SKILCRAFT products including cleaning & janitorial, mattress & bedding, medical supplies & equipment, office products & equipment, paints & tools, and writing instruments.

ABOUT OUR MISSION

The Alabama Industries for the Blind's mission is to provide meaningful employment for individuals with disabilities in areas of manufacturing and delivery of service contract.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Staff Driver will be responsible for providing transportation and travel with staff to AIB functions, business opportunities, conferences, and in-service training. This position reports to the Employee Relations Assistant.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Certificate.
  • Must possess a valid Alabama Driver's License.
  • Must be able to be insured by AIDB insurance carrier by maintaining a good driving record.
  • Must possess a good driving record with no record of DUI. Driving record will be checked for the previous five years.
  • Must possess computer skills in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) and Google Suite (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, and Sheets).
  • Physically able to stoop, bend, and lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must complete pre-employment drug screening to be eligible to drive an AIDB state vehicle.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience working with the blind, visually impaired, deafblind, and other disabilities.
  • Valid Alabama Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Passenger (P) or School Bus (S) Endorsement and complete the DOT Physical.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Must follow AIDB Policies and Procedures.
  • Must understand, support and follow the mission of the AbilityOne Program by remaining in compliance of statutory and regulatory requirements set forth in the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Act. You are expected to conduct all business ethically and lawfully.
  • Must maintain a valid Alabama Drivers License.
  • If a valid Alabama Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Passenger (P) or School Bus (S) Endorsement is received, must maintain and complete the DOT Physical. Must register for and provide AIDB access to FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
  • Must follow AIDB Travel Policy and Procedures. Complete required travel forms and provide supporting documentation as pertinent to the request. Assist with completion of travel forms for staff and monitor approval of all request.
  • Must follow AIDB Transportation Policy and Procedures when driving a state vehicle. Keep the vehicle neat and clean. Work collaboratively with AIDB Transportation Department on scheduling routine maintenance for the vehicle.
  • Must maintain a Travel Calendar and coordinate transportation request for the AIB Leadership Team. Communicate availability after receiving transportation requests to the person making the request.
  • Must be able to perform your responsibilities that sets a good example for others to follow.
  • Must be able to deal pleasantly and courteously with all of the AIB Team to include co-workers, the leadership team and Executive Director by telephone, written correspondence and in person by using good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and deal with changes in the work assignments.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide safe and reliable transportation for staff that are blind, visually impaired, deaf/blind, or have other disabilities.
  • Must coordinate the travel schedule and maintain the calendar on Google for staff requesting travel. Overnight travel will be required. The work schedule will be flexible including early morning, late afternoon, evening and may include weekend travel.
  • Must be able to provide transportation on a regular basis and maintain a good attendance record. Must be punctual for all assignments.
  • When a blind staff member has a service animal such as a guide dog, you must transport as required.
  • When staff that are blind that may need a sighted guide it will be required to provide the techniques for mobility. Follow the appropriate techniques for safe mobility.
  • Must maintain professional appearance, interact with AIDB staff and public in a positive manner, and demonstrate being a part of the team by providing good communication skills. This will include in person, by telephone, or written correspondence.
  • Display organizational skills and the ability to exercise good judgment, demonstrate a high level of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Must have the ability to assist individuals that are blind, visually impaired, deafblind in personal communication by reading and proofing correspondence, reading and retrieving written information, retrieving information from the internet for travel documentation and/or services. Use of assistive technology to prepare materials in accessible format (Assistive Devices, Braille or Large Print)
  • Must have the ability to utilize map-reading skills and/or accessing the internet for travel directions and mileage.
  • Must remain calm in emergencies.
  • Must attend Orientation and Mobility Techniques Training within the first thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Must possess or develop an understanding of cultures and needs of persons who are deaf, blind or deaf/blind, ensuring all actions and decisions demonstrate a respect for and value of persons with sensory loss.
  • Must attend Disability Sensitivity Training Class within the first thirty (30) days of employment.


SALARY: $15.69 - $18.30 Scale C5 Rank 32

Work Schedule, 260 days

$23.65 Scale S1 Rank HS - CDL

When on a driving assignment that requires to drive a CDL, will be paid CDL pay.

This is a non-exempt position and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Payroll Schedule - Semi-monthly, Direct Deposit is required.
