The Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) is one component of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB). AIB includes the manufacturing facility in Talladega, Alabama and Birmingham, Alabama along with the operations of five Base Supply Centers in two states, which are located on Redstone Arsenal, Fort Novosel, Anniston Army Depot, Robins Air Force Base and Moody Air Force Base.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Plant Manager role will be responsible to plan, organize, directing, and controlling all activities related to the manufacturing operations for our Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) division. The role is will be responsible for working with the AIB team with strategic planning, management directives, and AIB's ISO requirements, purchasing manufacturing materials, maintaining the warehouse and inventory management system, and maintenance of equipment including preventive maintenance.

You will display a positive, approachable, and professional demeanor and will serve as a consultant to AIB team members on manufacturing operations. This position reports to the Executive Director, AIB.



BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Engineering with a concentration in Industrial Management or Administration or related field from an accredited college or university

OR

Minimum of 10 years of work experience in a senior-level management position of a complex manufacturing operation with profit and loss responsibilities and direct manufacturing experience preferably in the position of manager or supervisor.
  • Experience in buying, planning, scheduling, or master scheduling.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of all state, local, and Federal regulations including Department of Labor and OSHA.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of AbilityOne Program and its regulations.
  • Detailed knowledge of all aspects of government contract administration including basic contract requirements, drawings, and blueprints.
  • Communicate complex ideas well orally, in writing, and with sensory impaired individuals including making presentations to management and consumer groups as required.
  • Work independently, exercise discretion, and good judgment.
  • Work cooperatively with other AIB management staff such as Sales & Marketing, Quality Control, Production & Inventory Control, Business Services, Public Relations, and others.



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience working with individuals that are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, multidisabled or has another significant disability.
  • Certification of Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.
  • Minimum five (5) years of prior work experience in apparel or textile manufacturing.
  • Minimum five (5) years of prior work experience within an industrial sewing and packaging environment with direct manufacturing supervision.



POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Must follow AIDB policies and procedures.
  • Must understand, support and follow the mission of the AbilityOne Program by remaining in compliance of statutory and regulatory requirements set forth in the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Act. You are expected to conduct all business ethically and lawfully.
  • Demonstrate a good attendance record.
  • Must be able to perform your responsibilities that sets a good example for others to follow.
  • Must be able to deal pleasantly and courteously with all of the AIB Team to include co-workers, Supervisors, Line Leaders, and Executive Director along with customers, brokers, and truck lines.
  • Working independently, as well as with the team, the Plant Manager for AIB will provide accurate and timely information to the Industries management team.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and deal with changes in the work assignments.
  • Travel between Industries locations (Talladega and Birmingham). A reasonable accommodation of a staff driver will be supplied for an applicant that is visually impaired or blind.
  • Possess computer skills in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.) necessary to create and maintain records and reports.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Must possess or develop an understanding of cultures and needs of persons who are deaf, blind or deaf/blind, ensuring all actions and decisions demonstrate a respect for and value of persons with sensory loss.
  • To serve as a member of the Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) operations team and be an active participant in the development and implementation of a strategic plan.
  • Develop and present manufacturing budget for approval to the Executive Director.
  • Become knowledgeable of all AIDB Policies and Procedures.
  • Responsible for the supervision and provide support to the supervisors on planning, organizing, and scheduling workloads, plant layout, floor plan, and workflow analysis.
  • Work with the Human Resources Institute Partner in planning personnel to establish and record baseline employee production data, factory load, and line balancing for effective use of personnel and equipment.
  • Collaboratively work with the Human Resources Institute Partner on recommending employees for participating in the Upward Mobility Program that will motivate and increase individual productivity.
  • Collaboratively work with the AIB Maintenance department to develop and improve work methods, work aids, jigs, fixtures, and workstations.
  • Provide placement of manufacturing personnel for the most effective use of labor, equipment relative to capacity and production schedules.
  • To serve as a member of the research and development team relative to current production lines as well as new product and service feasibility projects and cost studies.
  • Provide recommendations relative to equipment purchases and utilization, development of material purchase descriptions, and specific order quantities for all materials purchased in compliance with AIDB Policies and Procedures and state laws.
  • Work with the Human Resources Institute Partner for recommendations relative to employees under the direction of the Plant Manager for employment and/or transfer decisions, annual performance evaluations, progressive discipline process, the recommendation for termination of employment that follow AIDB Policies, and Procedures, Federal and State Laws.
  • Provide recommendations for awards and certificates of recognition.
  • Participate with the AIB management team in monthly financial reviews of performance to budget and propose manufacturing adjustments to stay within the budget.
  • Perform all Contract Management duties related to AIB's prime or subcontracts with DLA and GSA including maintaining documentation and records related to all contracts.
  • Develop and maintain raw material requirement database for GSA, DLA, and commercial orders.
  • Develop, implement and monitor a waste reduction program.
  • Assist in the establishment and recommendation of management information systems, particularly in the area of resource management, inventory control, manufacturing capacity, and management performance, and in conjunction with AIB's ISO requirements.
  • Provide assistance in the development of material purchase descriptions and specific order quantities for all materials purchased in compliance with established AIDB policies and state laws.
  • Monitor plans and schedules and develop alternatives where the need is indicated.
  • Work with implementing and maintaining a payroll and production data collection system that complies with DOL, AIDB, and NIB requirements.
  • Establish minimum/maximum levels for the inventory of raw and finished goods and provide proper documentation for inventory movements.
  • Coordination of the warehouse layout, equipment, space utilization, product identification and classification, packaging, packing, and palletizing to improve the safety and efficiency of inventory operations.
  • Within AIB software environment, utilize an inventory cycle counting system to monitor actual inventory quantities compared with inventory records and develop and implement a system to ensure the security of inventory.
  • Assist in establishing inventory values as required by auditors, AIDB policy, and internal planning and budgeting.
  • Work closely with all departments to reduce inventory levels by eliminating obsolete inventory, establishing a slow-moving inventory list, and control of supplier delivery schedules.
  • Help research and recommend the technology, which would enhance data collection (payroll, inventory, etc.) and information exchange.
  • Guide the development of an efficient and effective maintenance program for all equipment related to the manufacture of products, the transportation of materials, and the operations of the physical plant.
  • Institute a preventative maintenance program in compliance with state and federal regulatory guidelines incorporated with the TIW program.
  • Complete Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification within the first 24 months of employment.
  • Must attend Disability Sensitivity Training within the first six (6) months of employment.


SALARY: $75,000 - $100,000 Salary Scale A1 Rank 04

Direct deposit is required.

This is an exempt position, and is not subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
